Vaccine Requirements for the State of Mississippi

Vaccine requirements may be relaxed or eliminated in some regions and/or states due to shortages in the manufacture of some vaccines. Please contact your healthcare provider, or your local public health department for more information.

Vaccine Age/Grade Comments
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP) Day Care, Head Start, K-12 Day Care, Head Start-  4 doses, age appropriate, (means that the number of doses of a vaccine a child should have received is dependent upon the child’s age, and this defined by the CDC.)

K-12- 5 doses. If the 4th dose is received on or after the 4th birthday, a 5th dose is not required. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough (pertussis) booster, aka Tdap vaccine, before entry into school in the fall. Tdap vaccine given on or after the 7th birthday meets the new school requirement.

Hepatitis A None/No Requirements None/No Requirements
Hepatitis B Child Care, Head Satrt, K-12 3 doses required. An infant between birth and 2 months of age may receive one or more doses of Hep B vaccine.
Hib Day Care, Head Start Day Care, Head Start-  3 or 4 doses. The number of recommended doses of Hib vaccine will vary according to the age at which a child receives the 1st dose of Hib and the type of Hib vaccine administered.
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Day Care, Head Start, K-12, College/University Day Care, Head Start, K-12- 1 dose after first birthday

K-12- 2nd dose measles required prior to entry

College, University- MMR, M2- New enrollees at State 4-year colleges

Meningococcal None/No Requirements None/No Requirements
Pneumococcal Child Care, Head Start 4 doses. Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) is required for all children aged 0-4 years entering a child care facility, effective January 1, 2008. Children age > 5 years of age entering daycare, child care or after school care will not be required to receive PCV.
Polio Day Care, Head Start, K-12 Day Care, Head Start- Age appropriate.

K-12- 3 doses, last dose on or after 4th birthday

Varicella Day Care, Head Start, Kindergarten

Child Care: 1 dose. Varicella vaccine will be waived for evidence of past infection: including past history of chickenpox or a serologic confirmation of immunity to chickenpox

K-12: 2 doses.
