There have been 63 cases of mumps reported in Ohio, after an outbreak that began at Ohio State University in Columbus spread elsewhere. The majority of cases involve Ohio State students, staff, and others with close campus ties, but another 18 cases from the community have no university connection. Most of the people infected had received at least one round of the vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella, and patients have ranged in age from four years to 55. The onset of the illness was reported between Jan. 7 and March 22, but pinpointing the origin will be difficult.
