The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County reports two confirmed cases and one probable case of pertussis in unvaccinated infants, one of whom was too young to be vaccinated. Health officials say the cases are unrelated, and there is no outbreak. However, Dr. Karen Chapman, department director, says: “This does indicate that pertussis is present in our community and is being contracted by unimmunized infants.” She stresses the importance of ensuring children complete the vaccination series by age two and receive a booster shot prior to seventh grade and that adults receive the Tdap vaccine, which also protects infants who are too young to be vaccinated and those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.
