Health officials in Perth, Australia, are encouraging residents to get vaccinated against mumps as the number of cases continues to rise. Perth usually gets only a handful of cases a year, but three new cases were reported in the past week. Since late December, health authorities have confirmed 30 cases, and several residents have been hospitalized. According to health officials, most of the patients were infected locally, were older teenagers or adults in their 20s and 30s, and were partially or fully vaccinated against mumps. The increase in cases does not appear to be linked, which suggests the mumps virus is in wide circulation and there are may be other cases that have not been detected. People born after 1965 should make sure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, doctors say.
