A recent surge in cases has brought the total number of whooping cough cases reported in San Diego County to 454 so far this year. The total for all of 2013 was 431, the county health department said. “This year, a substantial increase in pertussis cases is being reported in San Diego County and throughout California,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer. “Parents, guardians and teachers should be vigilant for symptoms of the disease.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccination against the disease for children at ages two months, four months, six months, 15-18 months, and four to six years, with booster shots for preteens and adults.
