Health officials in New York City are looking into a number of cases of invasive meningococcal disease, a severe bacterial infection, among gay men and men who have sex with men. There have been four cases reported in recent weeks, including one that resulted in death. The cases have been reported in several boroughs of the city, among men ages 31 to 42 years. The four recent cases were all among men infected with HIV. Common symptoms of meningitis include high fever, headache, stiff neck, and rash that appear rapidly within two days; individuals experiencing these symptoms should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
