Doctors Urge Pregnant Women to Get Vaccinated Against Pertussis

San Diego County has reported more than 500 cases of pertussis since the start of the year, already exceeding the number of cases reported in all of last year. Because babies are at the highest risk for pertussis, doctors are urging pregnant women to get vaccinated. “There are significant benefits to the newborn when the mother is vaccinated during her pregnancy rather than after she delivers,” according to Rady Children’s Hospital’s Ava Schmitz.
