Health officials in Albuquerque, N.M., are encouraging students at La Cueva High School and family members to get a Tdap booster due to an ongoing whooping cough outbreak at the school. The outbreak has sickened 30 students this fall but has not led to any hospitalizations, according to David Selvage, infection disease epidemiologist for New Mexico. “The big focus is the infant population and women who are close to delivering,” noted Selvage. Albuquerque Public Schools has sent a letter to parents alerting them of symptoms and treatments for whooping cough. Although La Cueva is the only school in the state to experience an outbreak of the disease, there have been small clusters of illness in other schools, added Selvage.
