Laos has introduced the pneumococcal vaccine, the first nation to do so in South East Asia. The nation also has launched a demonstration project for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Over the next year, health officials plan to administer the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) to about 180,000 infants and the HPV vaccine to 13,000 girls. The GAVI Alliance has indicated that it is willing to support a national rollout of the HPV vaccine if the demonstration project proves to be a success.
