Whooping cough, already at epidemic proportions in Texas, is on its way to a 50-year high, state health officials say, with about 2,000 cases recorded already this year. Two infants, both too young for the vaccine, have died. The total number of cases for 2013 could surpass the recent high of 3,358 in 2009. Last year, there were more than 41,000 cases of whooping cough reported in the United States, with the highest rates seen among infants and children ages seven to 10 years.
