Dallas health officials are calling for city residents to receive the annual flu vaccine after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 90 percent of the children who died of the flu this season were not vaccinated. Dr. Christopher Perkins, Dallas County medical director, pointed out that the flu vaccine’s effectiveness varies based on a person’s age and underlying health issues, but the shot will minimize symptoms for those who still get infected with the flu. Three children in Dallas County, none of whom had received the shot, died of flu complications in the 2012-2013 flu season, which runs through May. The CDC recommends the vaccine for all children aged six months to 18 years.
