Health officials for the provincial government of Prince Edward Island (PEI) in Canada are very pleased with the results of their free rotavirus program. PEI added the rotavirus vaccine to the provincial immunization program in December 2010. “The rotavirus vaccine has been very successful in diminishing the amount of rotavirus on the Island,” says deputy chief provincial health officer Dr. Mitchell Zelman. “We have noticed a 97 percent decrease in rotavirus hospitalizations.” Also, more than 95 percent of eligible children are immunized for rotavirus. The program has a stronger uptake than those of Canadian provinces that still charge for the vaccine.
