Burundi has added a second dose of measles vaccine to its national immunization program. The second dose will bolster the protection of children against the highly contagious disease. Burundi has achieved a 94 percent national immunization coverage rate for measles, the result of an ongoing commitment from its government and partners such as GAVI Alliance, UNICEF, the Measles and Rubella Initiative, and the World Health Organization. However, outbreaks continue to occur in the country, with outbreaks recorded in six provinces from 2010 to 2012. “Immunization continues to be one of the most effective and least costly health interventions in the world to lower child morbidity and mortality,” says Johannes Wedenig, UNICEF representative in Burundi. “This is a right that must be guaranteed for all children, including the most vulnerable and marginalized.”
