California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law a bill that requires parents who do not want to vaccinate their children to obtain a doctor’s note before the children can be enrolled in school. The bill, AB 2109, requires parents of public-school students to receive a waiver from a physician or a nurse practitioner that says the parents received information about the benefits and risks of immunization. This requirement will take effect on Jan. 1, 2014. Brown pointed out that the law still allows parents to decide against having their children vaccinated, but it ensures that they make more informed decisions. He directed the state Department of Public Health to allow for a separate religious exemption on the waiver form; people whose religious beliefs prohibit immunizations do not need a medical professional’s signature.
