Researchers with Sanofi report that an experimental vaccine against dengue was protective against three of the deadly virus’ four strains. The trial involved about 4,000 children in Thailand. While the vaccine generated antibody responses against all four strains, it only protected against three of them. Investigators are now looking into the data to better understand the discrepancy. Dengue is endemic in more than 100 countries and is also showing up in the continental United States. The findings come a day after inspectors with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found “significant objectionable conditions” at Sanofi vaccine plants in Canada and France; the Sanofi Pasteur vaccines unit is now addressing these concerns.
