The number of people in Western Australia who have contracted influenza has risen at an alarming rate this year. According to the Health Department, 422 people were diagnosed with the flu over the first 20 weeks of the year, almost double the 221 reported during the same period a year ago. The flu season has yet to reach its peak, says the department’s Dr. Paul Armstrong, who is advising people to get vaccinated. “The important point is that this time of the year when the weather starts to get colder, and people start to think about wintry things, that one of those things should be getting vaccinated against the influenza virus,” he says.
