United Nations agencies and governments can order Pfizer’s Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccine now that prequalification status has been granted by the World Health Organization. An update of the original Prevenar vaccine, Prevenar 13 expands the number of covered bacterial strains from seven to 13. Pfizer forged a 10-year “Provisional Supply Agreement” in March—one month after the vaccine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—to ensure that infants and children in the poorest countries have access to the vaccine. The company will boost manufacturing capacity to ensure demand is met.
