India accounts for 83 percent of new polio cases worldwide, but the country is close to eradicating the disease through vaccination of children, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said recently. India, Pakistan, and Nigeria make up 99 percent of the worldwide polio cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. India must maintain a high polio vaccination rate or risk significantly increasing reports of the disease, which is what happened last year.
