UNICEF's campaign to eliminate poliomyelitis needs $210 million for vaccines, training, and logistics. A statement by the organization notes that due to the shortfall, "the eradication initiative is again at a turning point." The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has reduced the number of polio cases by over 99 percent in the past 15 years. Polio is still active, however, in Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Nigeria, India, and Niger, according to UNICEF.
