Hong Kong officials are calling for better reporting of infectious diseases after a recent outbreak of Japanese encephalitis threatened a neighboring southern Chinese province. A senior Hong Kong official called a summit with officials in Guangdong Province to determine how far the disease has spread. At last count, Guangdong health officials have reported 211 cases and 18 deaths from encephalitis, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. As a precaution, 100,000 children in the province have been vaccinated in the past week.
