Thousands of Indian health workers launched this weekend the country's largest polio immunization campaign to date. Organizers said the workers hope to inoculate 98 million children in 10 Indian states by the end of the week. Workers are expected to concentrate much of their effort in Uttar Pradesh, where approximately two-thirds of the over 1,500 new polio cases detected worldwide last year were found. The World Health Organization hopes to eradicate polio by 2005; however, a sharp increase in cases in Uttar Pradesh has hampered that objective, officials say.
