According to the Cambodian health officials, the last reported case of polio was reported in 1997, making the country the last one in the Western Pacific to eradicate the disease. Cambodia is still besieged by other diseases prevalent among the world's poorest nations, including tuberculosis and measles. Nearly six years after being named one of the world's most polio-endemic nations, Cambodia was considered free of the disease in October 2000, when the Western Pacific region was certified as polio-free during a meeting in Kyoto, Japan; however, the country is claiming Thursday as its landmark day in health care progress.
