Germany Orders 11 Million Smallpox Vaccine Doses
Reuters Health Information Services;
Stafford, Ned

[10/14/2002]

Germany is increasing its supplies of the smallpox vaccine from 24 million doses to 35 million doses after a 26.8 million euro purchase from Bavarian Nordic. The government hopes eventually to have enough doses for all of its 82 million citizens. Current plans call for the vaccine only to be utilized if a bioterrorist attack occurs. The German army has reportedly bought 1 million doses of a smallpox pre-vaccination, which helps reduce side effects and confer full protection.
