Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share the island of Hispaniola, on Friday launched their first joint campaign to eradicate polio from their countries. In Haiti, about 2 million children under the age of five will be vaccinated against polio, while in the Dominican Republic, about 700,000 children under the age of three will be inoculated against the disease. Young children in both countries will be vaccinated against measles as well. The combined vaccination campaign is being financed by UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Health Organization.
