Preparations for a new five-year national program of immunization against measles, targeting 1.2 million children, are underway in Kenya and Uganda. Under the current phase two plan, according to Dr. Eva Kabwonger, child survival and nutrition project officer for UNICEF in Uganda, children between the ages of 14 and 15 years will be the focus, because they were overlooked during the phase one initiative that strictly targeted children under age five. Each year, there are an estimated 12 million cases of measles in Africa and 450,000 deaths from the disease.
