California's Chiron Corp. is working to develop a tailor-made vaccine against a strain of meningitis that has resulted in many deaths in New Zealand during the last 11 years. The company is being contracted by New Zealand's Ministry of Health and will collaborate with the Norwegian National Institute of Public Health to develop the vaccine. Statistics show there have been almost 300 cases of meningococcal disease in New Zealand this year, including 15 that resulted in death.
