Whooping Cough Raises Fears at High River Day Care
Calgary Herald; B4
McGinnis, Sorcha

[07/05/2001]

Health officials in Calgary, Canada, are concerned following the discovery of a suspected case of whooping cough at a day care in High River. Health officials note, "One of the great challenges of this disease is [that] people don't think of it. When we find one case, we assume there are nine or 10 others that haven't been diagnosed." There have been 74 cases of the disease so far this year, a number which is consistent with previous years. Prior to entering school, children receive five doses of a vaccine to prevent whooping cough, but milder forms of the disease, which can last up to six weeks, can still occur in individuals who have been immunized.
