A strain of non-contagious meningitis has caused the death of one man and infected three others in Walnut Creek, Calif. According to Contra Costa County health investigators, the meningitis bacterium was traced to a contaminated cortisone injection. Sierra SurgiCenter in Walnut Creek performed 20 spinal cortisone injections on May 29 or May 31, from shots produced by one area pharmacy. Country health director Dr. Wendel Brunner noted that this strain of bacteria is not contagious and poses no risk to the general public.
