Prevnar Shortages Expected Throughout 2001

Prevnar, the new 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), is expected to be in short supply throughout the remainder of the year. The CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) reported that due to delivery delays of Prevnar in August 2001, some health care providers and health departments will experience shortages of the vaccine. Although Wyeth Lederle Vaccines, the manufacturer of Prevnar, anticipates that U.S. needs will be met through the rest of 2001, health care providers and health departments may continue to experience temporary shortages as supplies are being replenished.
