A new study suggests that an inexpensive and easy-to-deliver oral vaccine is 86 percent effective in preventing cholera. The disease, which is caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, causes severe diarrhea and can be fatal. According to the report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Shanchol vaccine was tested under field conditions in Guinea. More than 300,000 doses of the two-dose vaccine were administered during a cholera outbreak in 2012, and the vaccine was 82 percent to 86 percent effective, with few side effects.
