A rapid increase in the number of H1N1 flu cases prompted health officials in Alberta, Canada, to reopen flu clinics in some areas, instead of closing as planned over the Christmas holiday. A total of 128 cases of influenza—mostly H1N1—have been confirmed in Edmonton, with two deaths, one each in Edmonton and Calgary. According to Alberta Health Services’ chief medical health officer, Dr. Gerry Predy, an unusual number of people are reporting to hospitals with severe respiratory illnesses.
