Merck & Co. has announced a voluntary recall of one lot of its Gardasil vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV). A small number of the vials may contain glass particles due to breakage during manufacturing. The lot, which contains 743,360 vials, was distributed between August 20 and October 9. No other distributed lots are affected. About 10 of the vials are estimated to have glass particles in them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that individuals who have received the HPV vaccine do not need to take any action because of this recall, and to date no adverse events related to this lot have been reported, except for mild vaccine reactions such as redness at the injection site. Merck has been contacting offices or clinics that received the vaccine from the affected lot.
