Israel’s Health Ministry says a test of Jerusalem’s sewers detected the presence of the polio virus. A strain of the virus that originated in Pakistan has spread north from Rahat, marking the first time the virus has been found in the nation’s sewers since 2002. A nationwide vaccination drive is underway, with a goal of giving the live oral vaccine to 1 million children under age 10. Dozens of asymptomatic carriers have been identified through stool-sample testing.
