Israel will provide an advanced type of oral polio vaccine to 150,000 children in southern Israel. The move is a precautionary step to prevent the possible spread of the virus, and the decision comes after the Health Ministry consulted with experts from the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Health Ministry plans to order up to a million doses of the live attenuated vaccine to administer to children as well as adults elsewhere in the country. Health officials say no one has come down with the clinical form of poliomyelitis that causes paralysis, but the precautions are being taken after the live virus was been detected in routine samples of sewage taken since February in the Negev region.
