After New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a public health state of emergency due to an increase in flu cases, some residents lining up to be immunized found shortages of the vaccine. An informal telephone survey of dozens of drugstores across New York City by the New York Times discovered only three that had vaccines in stock. However, most of the pharmacies that ran out planned to have more delivered by Jan. 14. Cuomo’s declaration—which temporarily suspends a state law preventing children from being immunized by pharmacists—was in response to close to 20,000 flu cases statewide this season so far, up four-fold from last season.
