Nigeria has confirmed that 231 people have died from cholera this year, and more than 4,500 others have been infected with the disease. Officials had feared that an epidemic of cholera in neighboring Cameroon would spread into Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. The disease has broken out in northeastern Nigeria across 11 states. Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu also says the number of measles cases has increased ten-fold so far this year to 4,771 cases, from a year ago. The government plans to spend $14.1 million on vaccines and syringes to fight the epidemic.
